The series

Aspiring philosopher Barlow Bean dreams of leaving Spider Cliff for the nearby University of Sprawling-Mossville, but fate intervenes when the only connection with the outside world is destroyed under mysterious circumstances. And to Barlow's chagrin, he is pressed into his delegated role as the town's demon-hunter when the newest arrival turns out to be a demon in disguise. But is she really as dangerous as she pretends to be? In the ensuing series, these two protagonists must come to terms with who they are, individually and together.

The Spider Cliff Mysteries is an interactive animated comic series. The Macromedia Flash plug-in is required in order to read this webcomic. This features a continuous storyline, so for best results start at the beginning of the series. This series is conversation-based, and is not intended to hold the attention of a young audience. Some material may not be appropriate for children under 13.

How to interact

The Spider Cliff Mysteries uses Flash technology to present an interactive story through a series of branching conversations. Control is given through buttons that appear in the scene as needed. There are two types of control buttons: continue buttons and option buttons.

Continue Buttons are attached to speech balloons, indicating that the narrative is paused to allow you to read the speech. You can continue the story by clicking on the button or pressing the spacebar. The chapter will not continue until you click on the continue button or press the spacebar, so feel free to walk away from the screen to have a snack, work in the garden, whatever... they'll still be standing there when you get back.

Option Buttons appear at a branching of the storyline. Buttons will appear above characters you can speak to or items you can interact with. The number inside the button indicated the number of story branches that are available. Click on the button to see the possible actions or conversations. The background color of a choice will generally indicate the type of branch.

The goal is to enjoy the story. To assist in solving the mysteries, clues have been hidden in most of the chapters. Clues are things that either give hints to the solution of the mystery or offer additional background information about the characters (sometime both). Clues are also shown with the "clue indicator" in the lower-right corner of the chapter frame. When you see the "clue indicator", it means that something that someone just said might be important. If you have an account, I keep track of your clues and each one is worth one mammon (our local currency).

While it isn't required, signing up for a reader account can enhance your experience on this site. Your account keeps track of where you are in the story, so you can read the stories at your leisure. You will also be able to collect mammon, the official (fictional) currency of Spider Cliff, and you can redeem mammon for all sorts of cool free things like posters and bookmarks. I do not sell names and I keep all account data in a safe place. You do not need to reveal and personal information if you don't want to. There is no cost for signing up.
