Story 6: Mrs. McGuffin's Corpse

yeah. IIRC Barlow mentions in a previous story that Vedalia died only a couple of years ago. She was still around when the mcguffin coffin was buried, because SHE buried it (we think)

Ah, she buried the coffin, but did someone slip the corpse into the coffin and let her bury it, or did someone dig out the grave and add the corpse in the coffin later...
mmm, adding it later would have been a bother though, especially considering that she kept on burying more and more books (so they could always slide in the last batch)...

Looking through the back pages, clues and other various comments, I've had these ideas. They may not yield to anything, but they're things for consideration.
First, I'm thinking that Alex wearing the tie is to get a bond with Annabelle. He did go to her for the photography, which proves her usefulness, and he hasn't been that willing to change until she showed up.
Second, we haven't seen too much of the Sheriff recently. I know he's only recently woken up, but he still hasn't said too much. What he has said isn't all that useful.
Third, I wonder if the books she was found buried with are at all revelent. It did trigger the 'clue' icon, but only the speech bubble before. Psychology books don't seem all that suspicious, though.
I'm hedging my bets that one of the previous 20 or 30 people who lived in the city at the time had something to do with it, but it could easily be the Sheriff or Rebecca here, too. Too few clues yet, and too big a mystery. We'll see what comes next and maybe it'll be more enlightening.

all the chapters from 1 to 8 take place during a total of 2 days or so. So yea, he is probably taking it easy and remember, he said he has a headache.
I hope chapter 9 is coming out tonight cause in this one Alex and Barlow might meet up to talk about what they found.

Does anyone know roughly how many chapters this story will have? I have a strong hunch on the solution to the mystery, but I don't want to submit my guess until I have more information.

If there lived a demon in Spider-Cliff, wouldn't it have raised the zombies. And if the mayor wasn't dead then, would she not attract evil from outside the city? Maybe someone killed the demon to be safe, like in The Mayor Misplaced?

In 1928, a dog-like demon described as cynical was "dispatched in an appropriately ironic fashion." A vampire was slain at the the same location later. I believe that the demon killed herself. Suicide would be an ironic end for a cynical person ("life's a bitch and then you die"). The reason for suicide is that she felt she became useless, as hinted unintentionally by Crystal at the diner and confirmed by Barlow's words as an oracle when asked how the corpse ended up in the grave. How did she kill herself? She fell onto a sharp object, possibly made of silver (I'm thinking of a statue or some other large object made from or plated with that element). According to some myths, werewolves and vampires are especially vulnerable to that element. The place where she landed would also coincide with the one where the vampire was slain (perhaps the demon hunter led the vampire to that place as a trap).
Crystal has a very good reason to worry about this; after all, Spider Cliff has a tendency to repeat events from its past (quoting Secret of Mana, "Time flows like a river, and history repeats"). Barlow made it clear that a threat is imminent when he said, "mark how well she transformed... from evil... for one of YOU will fall victim... before this day is through!" It appears Crystal's internal conflict between her good intentions and her evil origins will become an external one pretty soon.
It's difficult to tell exactly who's skeleton it is, although that could be easily solved by giving it a proper burial. Hopefully, the name of the deceased would appear in the book of the dead immediately, unless there's some other special condition that must be met so that the name shows up (perhaps a name woudn't appear unless that person was a certified citizen of Spider Cliff). The reason why the name woudn't have shown up in the book before (knowing that Gwenevive McGuffin never existed and they were looking for another name) would be that the demon was not given a proper burial, since that coffin was meant to be the resting place for books, not a demon. In any case, it would be nice to know where demon corpses were deposited by previous demon hunters... perhaps it would lead to the source of the brain faucet?
Why the skeleton ended up in that coffin, I have no idea.
The reason for Vedalia keeping different axes and shovels for plants and animals could be that she didn't like animal matter, like blood, food, or feces, potentially getting mixed with plants and soil. For similar reasons she wouldn't want to touch the sewage pipe wrench if she didn't want to get her hands dirty (although pretty much any wrench is dirty since they get smeared with stuff like rust and oil). The blood stain on the fauna axe is strange, though; it figures she would have cleaned all her tools after she used them.

about the whole alex thing a few pages back... rebecca came to spidercliff 20 years ago, before alex was born, so alex must have been born in spidercliff, THEREFORE rebecca had to have had someone in spidercliff to...er...produce alex with. *takes off sherlock outfit and sits back in satisfaction*

theres the possibility someone used the axe (Sherriff maybe?) after Vedalia died and just didn't bother to clean it.
The sewage pipe wrench thing actually makes more sense, since you wouldn't want to use that on a pipe under the sink after its been used to repair a sewer line and possibly has crap on it.

Has it ever been explicitly stated how long ago Vedalia died, or have they only said that it was "a few" years ago?
EDIT: Oops, never mind. Got my answer.

haha, the new chapter is a reference to Hercules 12 tasks and Annabelle says later in there that 'would not quite be a hurculean task'
The first clue is that the book was written by FD Blake, some 10 years or so after he killed the himalayan canine.
the second clue is 'the 12 tasks of a demon...' a clear reference to The 12 Tasks of Hercules.
and the final one is that alot of the sewer utilities are belowground (which is obvious, but theres another reason why thats a clue).
The last two clues indicate that Crystal has a huge, or shall we say, herculean task ahead of her.
and I think they are kinda cheating on the keeping all rooftops in the same state of repair cause she is supposed to fix them even though they are all leaking, or she could just fix the roofs over the buildings that are still lived in and used.
I wonder what the heck clogged up the toilet, I didn't think zombies actually had bowel movements....

Well, the digested zombie brain goo has to go somewhere. I just don't want to think about how it's removed. And it doesn't have to be a toilet that's clogged, but her brain-tap's sink, as well.
I'm not surprised about there being a chapter for zombies, as well. For some reason, though, I don't think Annabelle is about to jump right on them. Plus, there are further hints of a budding Alex-Annabelle relationship. Dunno what to make of it, though.
Now the big question is how can a demon be killed if the rules for their behaviour is only written down 10 years later?
