ok, but its still important to know whether Arabelle is from the town or the circus. It seems like she is from the town since she became a banker and all.

Arabelle is indeed from the town. That's all I can say right now (THEY won't let me say any more). All I can say is... all of your questions will be answered when the safe is opened.

Eliza knows when the sun will rise and set, etc., and the note in the secret passage indicates Eliza had been in the house, perhaps wrote the note to Annabelle. I don't think Eliza figured Barlow's plants would be in the way when she set up the beam reflector. I think that's why her pictures didn't turn out.

I think the dirt may be from Arabelle'sgrave. There was no pile of dirt outside the grave in "The Missing Corpse" chapter. Altough, who would consider dirt valuable?

plants could, for obvious reasons. but why would plants, even semi-intelligent ones, dig up the dirt ONLY in the grave? plus look at whats in the grave when Barlow is investigating it, that looks like the handle of a shovel.

I got the second clue, which is basically whatever is in there is very valuable.

other than the plants themselves, the only other clear idea is Eliza, she was hanging around the graveyard that morning. As far as it bieng grave soil, if someone just wanted to remove the dirt somewhere else, theres alot of easier places to toss it than in a safe.

maybe there is something supernatural going on that involves the plants either directly or indirectly.

What if, JUST what if, the currency used by the circus people WAS dirt?

Posted by smjjames, 5:14pm, 2 Sep, 2005

well, things like salt, sugar, seeds, shells, and gold dust were used as currency somewhere sometime, so its plausible. If that's true, then thats the reason why Spider Cliff couldn't accept their currency. STILL, since dirt is everywhere, why steal that particular dirt in the bank?

also, look at the dirt walls of the grave, its a lighter brown, but the soil in the safe is a dark, almost black color, like fertilizer. Which means its a very rich soil (I think), so its probably from the marsh.

I don't recall if the sheriff said he actually looked inside the bags or just assumed they held coins.

Posted by eeyore, 6:45pm, 2 Sep, 2005

He just assumed there were coins inside.

I think the one thing in common here is greed. I just can't figure out how that tells us who is responsable.
